The U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires, a.i., Jeff Daigle, delivered the
introductory remarks and Public Affairs Officer (PAO) Sean McIntosh delivered
the closing remarks. Peter Tan Keo, Vice President for Strategy, Development,
and International Cooperation, gave the welcoming address for the half-day

<div class="Pa8" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="color: #221e1f; font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;">The event covered
several important aspects of entrepreneurship: starting a business, preparing a
solid business plan that attracts investors, developing a marketable product,
and obtaining and managing a financial budget efficiently. The last session was
a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Prum Virak, Public Affairs Specialist (PAS)
at the U.S. Embassy. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="Pa8" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="color: #221e1f; font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;">In his introductory
remarks, Chargé d’Affaires Jeff Daigle shared with the audience that Global
Entrepreneurship Week is celebrated in over 100 countries through various
activities and seeks to inspire the entrepreneurial spirit and showcase how it
contributes to a country’s growth. He also said that he believed this event
will generate more interest in entrepreneurship in Cambodia and help
individuals to “better their lives, their families’ lives, and, ultimately,
their communities.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="Pa8" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">

<div class="Pa8" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="color: #221e1f; font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;">“The United States
has been assisting the Cambodian government as well as Cambodian youth to
create and maintain a healthy, democratic society,” he said. “These efforts,
combined with the growing entrepreneurial spirit present in so many Cambodians,
show Cambodia’s true potential.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="Pa8" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="color: #221e1f; font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;">The event also
included the sharing of success stories by a number of local and other
entrepreneurs in Cambodia, who also described some of the challenges and
difficulties they encountered in opening and operating a business. These
speakers comprised Chang Bunleang and Seng Kang (Managing Partners of Brown
Coffee and Bakery); Dieter Billmeier (Vice President of Canadia Bank); Mr.
Veasna (Fii & Associates); Sok Hach (President of Economic Institution of
Cambodia and CEO of Golden Rice); and Ho Vandy (CEO of World Express Tours and
Travel). <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="Pa8" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="Pa8" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="color: #221e1f; font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;">Participants in
this informative event asked the guest speakers several probing questions
concerning their businesses and were offered valuable advice on how to succeed
as entrepreneurs. Sok Hach said that individuals in business need to be
realistic, true to themselves, and true to their partners. He further
elaborated, “What is important [about being an entrepreneur] is to be
unconventional; you have to be able to create a very good business plan to
attract inventors and as long as you have it, you will have access to loans
very easily.” <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="Pa8" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="Pa8" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="color: #221e1f; font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;">Chang Bunleng and
Seng Kang shared with the students that it was critical to believe in one’s
ideas and to remain committed to the project. They recounted how the idea of
Brown was conceived and how it became a reality, starting with their part-time
jobs in coffee shops in Australia and their belief that similar coffee shops
could be replicated in Cambodia. They did not go to any banks for financial
support and instead prepared a business plan for their parents and asked them
to invest in their idea. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="Pa8" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="Pa8" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="color: #221e1f; font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;">“They [our parents]
seemed. . .to not have confidence in us because we did not have a background in
business, since we studied architecture, engineering, and the arts,” said Chang
Bunleang. “However our strong determination and passion proved to them that we
really wanted to try and [were] committed to success.” <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="Pa8" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="Pa8" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="color: #221e1f; font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;">Brown is now one of
the top coffee shops in Phnom Penh, with a constant growth in sales each year. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="Pa8" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="color: #221e1f; font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;">Dieter Billmeier,
who has been working in the banking sector for more than 30 years, said that
the Cambodian banking sector has experienced positive growth. He added that
more and more entrepreneurs are seeking investment capital from the bank, and
that Canadia Bank commercial loans have broadened the financing opportunities
of entrepreneurs in Cambodia. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="color: #221e1f; font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;">The
University of Cambodia expresses its sincere appreciation to the U.S. Embassy
and all of the guest speakers for their contributions to this exciting event,
and it looks forward to collaborating on further educational activities with
the U.S. Embassy and local businesses.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

ceremony hosted at the University of Cambodia (UC) on December 1, 2011. The
campaign was widely celebrated throughout Cambodia and around the world. UC and
People Health Development (PHD) Association co-organized the event themed, “Getting
to Zero,” which refers to the three goals of the World AIDS Campaign: zero new
HIV infections, zero AIDS-related deaths, and zero discrimination. H.E. Tea
Phalla, Deputy Director, National AIDS Authority (NAA), Por Malis, Vice
President for Operations, and Ou Ratanak, Executive Director of PHD, delivered
remarks at the well-attended event. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

University of Cambodia (UC), in cooperation with the Ministry of Women’s
Affairs amd People Health Development (PHD) Association, hosted a program to celebrate
the 16 Days of Action and White Ribbon Campaign, which aims to stop violence
against women and children. The program was hosted on December 3 at UC and
consisted of several components: an opening session, a skit, a question and
answer session, and a certificate presentation ceremony. H.E Samraing Kamsan,
Senior Adviser to the President of UC and Secretary of State for the Ministry
of Culture and Fine Arts, and H.E. Hor Malin, Under-Secretary of State for the
Ministry of Women’s Affairs, delivered remarks at the event, which was widely

<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;">The
University of Cambodia Student Senate (UCSS) successfully organized a seminar
on the “7 Habits of Highly Effective College Students,” which was supported by
the University of Cambodia (UC) and Top Leadership Center (TLC), a leading
training organization in Cambodia. Based on Franklin Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly
Effective College Students, the half-day seminar was held on December 11, 2011,
at UC. Over 70 students participated in the event, which was supervised by Gina
Lopez, Associate Dean of the College of Management. The seminar was the seventh
of eight projects that the 5th Mandate of UCSS successfully completed in 2011.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="Pa8" style="line-height: 115%; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;">The
purpose of the seminar was to empower university students to succeed in college
and beyond. In addition to learning about how to improve their study habits,
students learned about leadership skills and how to set achievable goals,
prioritize multiple tasks, and work with others. The workshop also covered how
to be a more productive member of society. It was designed to strengthen the
relationship between UC and TLC, as well as to promote UC students. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

training workshop highlighted the growing competitiveness of Cambodian
students, many of whom currently study at two or more universities because they
believe they will have better job prospects and opportunities after earning two
undergraduate degrees. Additionally, it highlighted the increasingly demanding
academic requirements at higher education institutions in Cambodia, as a result
of institutional and national efforts aimed at improving education quality at
the tertiary level.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

On November 21, a team of three students from the
University of Cambodia (UC) won the Cambodian Red Cross competition program,
themed “Getting to Zero,” in recognition of World AIDS Day on December 1, 2011.
The theme refers to three goals of the World AIDS Campaign: zero new HIV
infections, zero AIDS-related deaths, and zero discrimination. Four
universities participated in this program: UC, Institute of Technology of
Cambodia, University of Health Science, and Norton University. Teams from each
university were asked to respond to questions related to HIV and AIDS, and
there were two rounds in the competition. The topic of the first round was the
“Three Zeros,” while the topic in the second round was “Prevention of HIV from
Mother to Child.”<o:p></o:p></div>

HIV infection from mother to child? And, as a youth, what can you do to prevent

The three winners of the Presentation Skills
Contest were Lay Sophalin (1st Place), Eung Kimmuyly (2nd Place), and Heng
Malyka (3rd Place). USDS would like to congratulate the winners for their
outstanding performances, and would also like to commend the other 17
semifinalists who competed in the competition. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
The objectives of the contest were to increase the
organization’s membership, improve the public speaking and communication skills
of UCSDS members and the event’s participants, build students’ confidence and
competence, and reinforce researching skills among students. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
Prior to the competition, 20 students
participated in a rigorous recruitment process and were selected to compete as
semifinalists in the December 17 event. The students then researched the topics
and prepared their presentations, under the guidance of experienced UCSDS
debaters. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
On the day of the competition, the 20
semifinalists competed to earn a spot in the final round. Only 10 finalists
were selected to compete in the final round, and the top three presenters were
declared the winners of the competition.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
The contest would not have been successful
without the kind cooperation of the four judges: Ms. Gina V. Lopez, Associate
Dean of the College of Management; Seng-Dao Keo, Director of Office of the
President; Min Seiha, Associate Dean of the College of Social Sciences; and Lay
Sokheng, a former UC lecturer. UCSDS would like to thank the four judges for
their time and guidance. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
After the competition, students shared what they
had learned in this process, with some saying that it helped them learn more
about ASEAN and public speaking, and others emphasizing that it was a good
opportunity to strengthen relationships with their peers at the University. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
“This contest is not about winners or losers;
it’s about learning from each other’s mistakes so that we can live in one
united world,” said Lay Sophalin.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">

<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;">Among
many other student organizations at the University of Cambodia (UC), UC
Cambodian Red Cross Youth (UCCRCY) is an organization in which students are
actively involved in voluntary work at both UC and in Cambodian society. Since
this club was established in July 2011, we have participated in many volunteer
activities. For example, we helped to clean Prey Samrong Pagoda in Takhmao
district, Kandal Province before Pchum Ben Day, and we were involved in many
volunteer activities sponsored by the Cambodian Red Cross (CRC), including a
volunteer trip to Bar Phnom District in Prey Veng province to deliver food and
aid materials to citizens affected by recent flooding. In addition, we also
volunteered for activities sponsored by the University. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;">Why do
youth volunteers participate in these activities? And what are the benefits of
volunteer work? As volunteers, we enjoy giving back to our community and
helping a worthy cause, but we also gain valuable experience that can help
prepare us for future employment. Through volunteerism, young students can: <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="Pa8" style="line-height: 115%; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;">• Gain

<div class="Pa8" style="line-height: 115%; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;">• Build

<div class="Pa8" style="line-height: 115%; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">

the satisfaction of making a difference; and<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="Pa8" style="line-height: 115%; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;">• Have
additional sources of positive work references.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="line-height: 115%;">Through my experiences, I have found that building a network is
one of the most significant advantages of doing volunteer work. Young people
can meet other people who have similar values and can befriend these
individuals to enlarge our network, as well as our knowledge base. The larger
your network, the more information you can get; and information provides you
with opportunities.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="Pa8" style="line-height: 115%; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;">The
challenge, though, is to find a volunteer opportunity that suits each
individual. Think about your interests and explore volunteer opportunities
related to those interests. Also, be willing to explore opportunities that you
are completely unfamiliar with because you will broaden your knowledge base and
may discover that you enjoy them.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="Pa8" style="line-height: 115%; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="Pa8" style="line-height: 115%; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;">Volunteering
is something everyone can do, regardless of who they are. As a volunteer, you
can make a difference. By helping others, you gain new experiences and can
develop additional professional skills. It can be a very rewarding experience
and can also be a valuable asset to your job.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="Pa8" style="line-height: 115%; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="Pa8" style="line-height: 115%; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;">On behalf
of UCCRCY, I would like to encourage all UC students to become involved in
volunteerism, especially with our club, so we can all help our friends, the
University, and Cambodian society.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span style="line-height: 115%;">Finally, I would like to express my appreciation to the University
of Cambodia, Kong Ratana (our Advisor, UC Registrar, and Director of the Office
of Administration), staff members, and students for showing their support and
helping us to complete our projects. I wish you all the five gems of Buddhist
Blessing.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="color: windowtext; font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;">On December 12,
the Writing Alliance volunteer group at the University of Cambodia (UC) hosted
a “Resume and Cover Letter Workshop” for 50 students. The workshop covered how
to write an effective resume, cover letter, and thank you letter. Eight
students worked collaboratively to research the topics and deliver the
workshop; they were: Chhay Daroth, Chrin Visal, Nguon Setha, No Sophearith, San
Boromeichan, Sok Lak, Tim Vutha, and Yon Phanith. The students worked under the
guidance of Seng-Dao Keo, Director of the Office of the President, who also
provided the students intensive training in the topic. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;">The Writing Alliance students
presented on how to write an effective resume, cover letter, and thank you
letter. Workshop participants also received the “UC Guide to Resumes,” which
contained information from the presentation and included samples of resumes and
letters (a PDF version of the guide will be available for download on the UC
Library website shortly). After the presentation, there was a short question

excitement about being a part of this workshop. He said that he learned how to
create a smooth and effective presentation, and gained experience working on a
team because the members and advisor worked together to create a successful
workshop. In addition, he continued, the participants learned about topics not
directly covered in coursework, but that are important for university students
to master as they transition into the workforce: accurately summarizing their
qualifications, skills, and experiences; and differentiating themselves from
other candidates seeking similar educational or employment opportunities. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
