H.E. Dr. Surin Pitsuwan, ASEAN Secretary-General, will participate as Key Speaker in Plenary Session VIII: Asia’s Search for Leadership Synergy, during the 7th Asia Economic Forum (AEF).
This is the seventh consecutive forum held in Phnom Penh, and is sponsored by the University of Cambodia, the Asia Leadership Center, the Worldwide Support for Development (WSD), and the International Foundation for Arts and Culture (IFAC).
H.E. Dr. Surin Pitsuwan currently serves as the Secretary-General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). In this role, H.E. Dr. Surin Pitsuwan is responsible for a broad portfolio that covers political-security, economic, and socio-cultural affairs.
ASEAN is a regional association comprised of 10 member states: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Together, ASEAN has a GDP of approximately US$1.5 trillion and a population of about 600 million people. This vibrant regional mechanism has demonstrated tremendous growth since its inception, and is laying the foundation to concretize plans to build the ASEAN Community by 2015.
H.E. Dr. Surin Pitsuwan will be accompanied by H.E. Sayakane Sisouvong, ASEAN Deputy Secretary-General, and Dr. Mely Caballero-Anthony, Director of External Relations- ASEAN Secretariat. H.E. Sayakane Sisouvong will speak during Plenary Session I: The Quest for Asia’s Regional Architecture, while Dr. Caballero-Anthony has been tasked to speak during Plenary Session III: Food and Energy Security.
